Faith Deployed…Again Contributors

Welcome to Wives of Faith and the blog tour for Faith Deployed…Again, written by 29 military wives and moms from all over the world. Jocelyn Green, a contributor to Wives of Faith, published Faith Deployed in 2008, and it met with such a strong response that she followed up with the sequel this summer.

You can read an excellent review of the book by Beth Reavis here, and over the next few days you will be “meeting” many of the contributing writers to the book who are members here at Wives of Faith.

I pray you’ll be blessed by this, and there will be TWO giveaways: one from Jocelyn, and one from Pattie. Stay tuned!

Faith Deployed…Again: A Book Review

The humility required in allowing others to serve us can be difficult, but so important in our journey of faith.  When we allow the body of Christ to support us, we bless others by letting them use the gifts and strengths God has given them to share in His work.-Excerpt from “Held Up” by Bettina Dowell in Faith Deployed…Again

I love being a military wife.  I am only just recently coming to this realization.  Becoming acclimated to this life has been a real challenge for me.  During my last “I’m having a military wife meltdown,” I had a friend tell me to quit struggling against this life and just learn to flow with it.  That one little sentence from her and the encouragement from a fellow Christian military wife helped me so much.  That is what the reader will find in Faith Deployed… Again.

Written by author Jocelyn Green, along with almost 30 other contributing writers from amongst the ranks of every branch of the military, Faith Deployed… Again contains daily morsels to encourage and uplift  today’s Christian military wife.  The devotional is divided into specific areas of concern for many military wives, with a special section written by and for Blue Star Moms.  Each individual devotional is written on a specific top within that area of concern and contains scripture, devotional, questions to ask yourself, and a prayer.

As I write this to you, my husband is in the field–which is not quite the same as going through a long deployment, but not without its challenges.  For example, my washing machine decided to break three days after he left.  That is not really a good thing for a family of six.  That same day I got my devotional Faith Deployed…Again in the mail.  As I sat at the mailbox and flipped through the pages, I began to cry.  The devotional was just what I needed at the moment, a reminder that I am not alone.  God is always with me looking for ways to encourage me and propel me forward in the plan He has for us as a military family.  And I have this “Band of Sisters” (see page 228) to rely on, confide in, and be encouraged by throughout my journey.  It is an awesome thing!

I highly recommend this devotional for any military life in whatever stage of tour you find yourself.  For the new military wife, it will answer questions and give clarity.  For the mid-tour wife it will provide some much-needed fuel for the journey.  And for that seasoned or even retired military wife, it will serve as a reminder of what the journey is for and how you can encourage those who God has entrusted to you that are new.

Many blessings to you on your journey as a military wife.

~Beth

Goodnight Hawaiian Moon

My husband recently signed reenlistment papers, so we are scheduled to move to Hawaii later this year.  In an effort to prepare my children for the move and the new location, I have started buying books on a variety of subjects, including airplanes and Hawaii.  One of the books I have purchased is Goodnight Hawaiian Moon by Dr. Carolan,  illustrated by his wife Joanna F. Carolan.

Goodnight Hawaiian Moon is a picture book that will help your child gain a better understanding of what life would be like while living in Hawaii.  The story is filled with goodnight wishes to much of the plant and animal life that inhabit the islands.  Your child will get to say goodnight to the “paniolo horse with the flower lei,” and the “dolphins jumping in the sea.”  Included with the book is a CD read by Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, a Grammy Award Nominee for Best Hawaiian Music Album.  In the background you can hear Ken Emerson softly playing the guitar, along with ocean and nature sounds.  After the story Amy Hanaiali’I Gilliom also sings, in Hawaiian and English,  the Hawaiian version of Brahms’s Lullaby, rewritten by Malia ‘A.K. Rogers.

There are so many things you can teach with this book.  The story contains words that rhyme.  This is very helpful for the emergent reader in your home.  The illustrations are beautiful and show the island life of Hawaii in their active and resting state, which lends itself to further science study.  The dogs and cats are given are depicted surfing and hula dancing, which is not what dogs and cats would do, but it adds flavor to the story and shows cultural activities that would be seen regularly.  There are also several words in the Hawaiian language in the story for your child to learn.

I think this is a wonderful book.   Listening along with the CD is very peaceful.  We listen to it in the car and it is so nice, calm, and serene.  The publisher recommends this book for ages 4-8.  I recommend this book for the whole family.  Military families, homeschoolers, and anyone who would like to learn more about Hawaii will benefit from reading this book.  Many blessings as you travel through literature!  Aloha!

~Beth

Hawaii

Hawaii by Christine Taylor-Butler is part of the Rookie Read About Geography series.  The series has books available for all 50 United States plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.  The pages are made up of beautiful photographs and include fast facts about the state of subject.  In Hawaii, the reader will learn about the state flower of Hawaii, the meaning of Aloha, animals that inhabit the islands, as well as a lot of other fun filled facts for the explorer heart within your child.

As a homeschooling mommy and former educator, I found this book to be a wonderful asset to our library.  The photographs are captivating.  The information shared is brief and should prove interesting to the mind of your child.   This book will be especially helpful to the military family who moves frequently, giving children insight into the new place they will be moving.  I would also recommend this book for homeschoolers, elementary teachers, and librarians.  Happy reading and Aloha!!!!

You can find the Rookie Read About Geography Series at amazon.com.

Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La!

Set in Paris, France, the city of love, Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La! definitely gets down to the heart of things. Written by Robin Jones Gunn, Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La! is one in a series of novels for women that will take you on an adventure emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  Follow the Father heart of God as you travel along with Lisa and Amy on their sisterchicks adventure through Paris.

Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La! follows friends Lisa and Amy from their first meeting at school through adulthood culminating in the adventure of a lifetime in the city of Paris, France.  The main characters meet as young girls in the 3rd grade, while living in Memphis, Tennessee.  Loyalty imbedded from the start, their childhood friendship blooms into something ever present in every woman’s heart, the need for that close bond with other women.  Author Robin Jones Gunn unfolds their lives together in this captivating novel about friendship, adventure, men, shoes, chocolate, struggles, and most importantly God.

If you are a reader of Robin Jones Gunn, this book will be no disappointment.  Each time I read one of these novels written by this woman, I think, “Can God be this good?”  As you read the words she has so thoughtfully penned, the love of God washes over you like a spring rain and you feel clean again.  I am always eager to read one of her books, devouring it in anticipation of what will happen next in the lives of the women, and sad when it is over because the adventure is finished…until the next one.

I highly recommend Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La! I might say this every time I finish one of these novels, but I believe this one is my favorite.  It awoke so many things inside me, including the desire to eat much chocolate!  Never really having a desire to travel to Paris, I found myself wanting to go there and experience all the things these women got to experience on their adventure.  Gunn definitely does her research and created a desire within me to know more about Parisians, the art, and good chocolate.

Given the opportunity within your schedule to have some much needed girl time, this book will provide so many things for your spirit, soul, and body.  Grab some chocolate, put on a soft beret, find a comfy chair and prepare your heart for an encounter with the living God as you partake of Sisterchicks Say Ooh La La!!!!
