Remedy for Spiritual Neglect

What are you struggling with? Deployment? Children? Marriage? Your relationship with God? The list can be rather endless at times. When life is rough, I find that I tend to run to the prayer closet. Getting down on my knees becomes a survival strategy.

But, there are moments in life when everything is wonderful. Newly married and fairly carefree, I have nothing to complain about right now.

. . . and I’ve forgotten about God.

It seems in all the wonderfulness of life, I’ve begun neglecting the One who really made it wonderful.

That is not my only problem. See, I also can’t seem to keep plants alive. Something about living in close proximity to me causes them to turn all brown and ugly,

and wilt

and look very dejected.

I have almost always managed to kill (not on purpose, I promise) flowers that have had the ill luck of falling into my hands.

My family wanted to treat me special for my birthday this past weekend. They gave me a beautiful little tropical plant. It’s gorgeous, and I desperately want to keep it alive . . . despite the odds. I’ve already apologized (very sincerely too, I might add) for it being unlucky enough to end up with me.

“sniffle” Sorry, I got choked up thinking about this poor, solitary plant’s chance at survival with me. Gets to me every time.

So, I started off my relationship with this plant trying to figure out what I could do this time to give it a better chance at life.

And . . . after much pondering, I think I’ve landed on it.

You see, plants need attention (water, sunlight, etc.). They don’t cry like babies, and they don’t whine like dogs. They don’t even wrap themselves around our feet and trip us like cats. There’s really nothing that they use to demand our attention.

God is like that. He doesn’t cry or whine at us. (Sometimes He’ll trip us to catch our attention, but that’s a story for another day.) He’s a gentleman. He waits for us to come to Him and to seek Him out. And in many cases, he suffers neglect, like my plant.

I find myself, more often than not, walking by my plant and thinking, “Oh, it should be watered. I’ll get to it later.” And, sadly, I’ll do the same thing with my relationship with God. “Oh, I should spend some time with God. I’ll get to it later.”

“tears” Now, I really am crying. How can I do that to my Savior?! How can I do that to myself?

We need that relationship with God far more than anything we’ve needed before. If we spend our life “waiting till later” what will we have? Nothing. Even worse, during those times of struggle (deployments, family struggles, etc.) our relationship with God will be as dry and wilted as all those plants that died on me. Where will that leave us? Where will that leave you?

Well,  I’m not willing to settle for a wilted, dead relationship with God.

As I renew my walk with God, my little plant is going to become more than just another plant that perishes in record time. As I try to keep my tropical miracle alive, I’m going to use it as a reminder for me not to neglect my relationship with God.

Would you join me? If you’re in a slow time in your relationship with God, then renew and rededicate with me right now. Just take a minute and tell God you want more. Begin there and allow yourself and God freedom to truly build a relationship together. You don’t have to be perfect now, just start afresh. He’s dying to be a part of your life again. Then leave a comment here letting us all know!

If you’re going strong in your Christian walk, share with me ways that you keep your relationship with God alive and vibrant. I’m all ears!

Perhaps even grab your own personal prayer plant reminder. Get something simple, small and pretty, like mine.

August Prayer

Let’s join Liz today in her August Prayer.

============================

August Prayer

August is a special month because my husband is coming home after an eighteen month deployment. I heard on NBC news that ten thousand troops are coming home from Iraq this month. I realized there will be many homecomings this month. There will be many happy wives and excited children. There will be many blessings across our military family.

It’s times like this when I want to thank the Lord for watching over our military family. The Lord Jesus Christ provides us all so much strength to overcome adversity. I believe that he does have a special plan for military members, spouses, and children. We all serve together.

I wanted to include a short prayer to all of those military families that are currently deployed this month:

Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for all the military families who have members deployed this month. We pray you give them strength to complete their mission. Your grace will lead them to a place that is safe. Your love will help them overcome the obstacles. We pray for the military members who are coming home this month.  We pray that they have a safe trip home. Please watch over the military families that are awaiting their spouses’ return. Lord, in times like this we turn to you to hold us in your arms. Your light is a beacon for us to follow. Thank you for walking with us during deployment and helping us cope with the separation. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

How’s your coverage?

A few days ago, in the middle of the desert we call home, our air conditioner died. This happened in the middle of the day, and not even 24 hours after our home warranty expired. The same home warranty I asked my husband about renewing about a week before. The same husband who decided we didn’t really need it and forgot to talk to me about letting it go. So, in the middle of the desert, in the middle of the day, I was so NOT ready to let anything go.

Fury, panic and perspiration struck all at once while I fumbled with fans and window blinds, trying to use what we had to keep the inside of our home slightly cooler than the scorching  temps outside. As our indoor thermostat soared past 87*, then 88*, and 89*, I fumed, “How could he just assume it was okay to let our coverage lapse?” Before the complete thought could even formulate in my mind, conviction from the Holy Spirit shot like a spear right through my heart:

“How’s your coverage?” and along with the question, a reminder of the short and powerful passage in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing.”

My logical and carefully formulated response was, “Well, I had a really good prayer time yesterday. And I said prayers with the kids at lunch. I’ve been really busy doing all this stuff for the chapel, and the families who needed me for different things. And…”

“Yesterday?”

I got it. Took a few minutes, but I got it.

In one fell swoop God brought me back to my knees and provided forgiveness, compassion and peace. So our warranty coverage lapsed. Big deal! Do we really depend on warranties, or do we serve a mighty God who cares for our every need? I’ve been telling my hubby for years that we have nothing to worry about; could it be that he was actually beginning to see it?

After a time of heartfelt repentance I was able to imagine how things could have gone differently had I been prayed up. Today. Would the air conditioner still have broken? Probably. Would I have reacted the same way? Probably not.

We are charged with living in prayer. Eating, breathing and sleeping in prayer:

Ephesians 6:18 “Pray in the Spirit at all times with every kind of prayer and request…”

At all times. When we rise in the morning and prepare breakfast for our families. As we fold laundry for each of our loved ones. While we are stuck in traffic behind a trash truck and the inner vents aren’t filtering as they should. At night, when sleep eludes us, and our mind runs through the day over and over again.

With every kind of prayer and request. Praising God for the new day and each of its possibilities. Thanking God for his protection when your children are out of your sight, or the parking space no one else has found. Requesting a time change at work so you can be home early for your family, or wisdom in knowing where to shop. Out loud, under your breath, in your heart; talking to God and sharing your life with Him has no limits.

Let’s examine our prayer life and determine in our hearts to be women of prayer, not just women who can pray. Will doing this change the circumstances in our lives? Sometimes. Will it change the way we react to and deal with these circumstances? Most definitely.

How do you exercise your prayer muscles?

A Call to Prayer

A Call to Prayer….

Five times a day a Muslim is bound to perform the Salaah, the fixed ritual of the Islamic prayer – worship. He should properly go to the nearest mosque to offer his prayers together with the whole congregation. Each of the five periods is preceded by the adhaan (or azaan – ezan as it is more commonly called). The muezzin (mu’adh-dhin in Arabic) calls out on each occasion:

  • Allaabu Akbar (4 times – “Allah is Most Great”)
  • Ash’hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah (twice – “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah)
  • Ash’hadu anna Muhammadar-rasulullaah (twice –“I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”)
  • Hava ‘alas-salaah (twice – “Come to prayer”)
  • Ilava ‘alal falaah (twice – “Come to the good”)
  • Allaaku Akbar (twice – “Allah is the Most Great”)
  • Laa ilaaha illallaah (“There is no god but Allah”)

Interesting isn’t it? Can you substitute Jesus and God for the above and what would it mean for you to declare these things aloud 5 times a day?

The last my husband was in Iraq there was a phone conversation where he was outside and you could clearly hear the call to prayer in the background (as he put it they are “serenaded” 5 times a day). A beautiful, haunting yet insistent sound. I think there’s a lesson there for us. Prayer is not taken lightly for Muslim men but is an integral part of each day, involving not only the actual stopping of activity but gathering together, ablutions beforehand, preparation, etc. It’s a serious thing. How much more so then, should we – who know the true and living God – take seriously our own call to prayer?

I am not saying you must stop everything, wash and fast, and run to chapel 5 times a day!  We serve a God who can hear the simplest prayer on the run and the one where you are on your face for an hour or more. A God who knows we are but dust and hears no matter what. And yet . . .  have we lost the awesomeness of knowing that GOD Himself is waiting to hear from us? In our ability to approach Him as a familiar Father without restrictions have we shed the fact that He is Holy too quickly? And what does that say to those around us, to our children?

I challenge you to sit and think about what God is calling you to do in regards to prayer in your life; to hear what the Spirit, our own Holy muezzin, has to say. Do you struggle with prayer? Believing God hears? How to pray? What to pray? All the above?! Then ask him to clarify. I want to challenge you also, if your husband is deployed to remind him of these things. To see the Muslim call to prayer not as an irritation but as an opportunity for prayer on his part as well!

Prayer Ministry Update

Wives of Faith, that is who we are.  Just as Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see,”  so our hope should be.  Our faith in God assures us that our prayers will be heard; and just as we know they are heard, we must believe that they are answered.

Whatever your need is at this moment, it is never unworthy to lift that need up to God.  Wives of Faith has a great group of ladies that are dedicated to pray . . . to pray for your need.  Simply email prayer@wivesoffaith.org and our prayer warriors will begin crying out to God and intercede  for you.
