Dealing with Disappointment

I had something very unexpected and very disappointing happen to me this week. There was absolutely nothing I could have done to change the outcome – it completely relied on someone else’s actions and decisions.

At first I was shocked. Then hurt. Then angry. Then sad. And of course, the inevitable question came up. Why?

Sometimes there is no explanation for why things happen. Sometimes there are things in life that come up where there was absolutely nothing you could have done to prevent something bad from happening. It’s a fact: disappointment happens. Happiness happens, too. You just hope there is more of the latter than the former. :)

As military wives, we know the rollercoaster of happy endings, devastating disappointments, wearisome worries. Life can sometimes seem pretty inconsistent.

Yet there is one constant we can always lean on.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8

“No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Joshua 1:5

I believe God uses hard situations to teach us valuable lessons – not to punish us, but to grow us. Not to hurt us but nurture us through the struggle. We are not here on this earth just for ourselves. God created us for a purpose – to bring Him honor and to give Him glory.

So during this season of disappointment and at times, struggle, I will thank Him for what He’s doing in this, and for what He’s done outside and around this situation. I will find the good in the bad, the diamond in the rubble.

How have you dealt with disappointment in your own life? What has God taught you? What can you share with others?

Amen!! I have had disappointment on mind a lot lately also! The other night I was repeating scripture in my mind, and I was repeating"Seek first the Kingdom of God and all things shall be given to you". As I was thinking of this verse, something inside me clicked! I just want to seek God's will in my life, nothing else! I know his ways are better than my own and he will bring me through whatever yuckie stuff I have coming my way. Thanks Sara for you encouraging words! It's nice to know that I am not alone :)
