“For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37, NIV)
Recently, I came across a website about miracles, miracles that had nothing to do with God! I was surprised and saddened as I read the articles describing some mystical involvement of a “force” within.
It is a shame when miracles are minimized to random occurrences. I also cringe to think people believe they can generate such power on their own . . . what arrogance! To say that a miracle has taken place because you found a parking place at the mall on a big sale day isn’t humorous or impressive. It is not a miracle if you were able to fix that botched hair coloring job or perm either. Yes, God orchestrates and allows all events in our lives, but to call such things a miracle is a stretch.
There are two basic ideas which need to be understood when it comes to miracles. First, God is holy and powerful. Secondly, when He decides to demonstrate His power, it usually involves a miracle.
The Bible clearly demonstrates that miracles involve God; they are not simply freak circumstances or happenings. A miracle also involves something pretty big, garnering a good bit of attention. Take, for example, some of the miracles God performed in the Old Testament for His people as they wandered in the wilderness: manna and quail from heaven for food, pillar of smoke during the day for guidance, pillar of fire at night. What about Daniel in the lions’ den? Numerous examples are also provided in the New Testament, with the biggest one of all being the virgin Mary’s miraculous conception of Jesus Christ. As Jesus began His official ministry and had a following, he performed several miracles which are documented.
Miracles were important then and they are important now because they demonstrate a power only God has. They serve as reminders to us that He is sovereign–in control of everything He has created. A miracle is when the world yells, “It’s impossible! It can’t happen! Just give up!” but God takes charge and says in His booming, authoritative voice, “Oh, YES it can!” It is when God steps in and shows He is still the boss, even when society is trying to eliminate Him from the equation. There are some things our Creator will not tolerate, and being left out of the world He created is one of them.
A miracle creates a sense of awe and humility for those who witness it, and I have witnessed miracles firsthand. The one with the greatest impact on me took place when I was left paralyzed and blind in one eye due to a horrific car accident at the age of fourteen. Doctors told me I would never regain sight in my eye or ever walk again. I personally began to experience a physical miracle in my body as the Lord used His power to heal me, restoring my vision to 20/20 and restoring most of the feeling back in my legs…all to the doctors’ incredulity. God used an impossible situation to remind me that nothing is impossible for Him! So, the definition of a miracle is not complex at all and has nothing to do with OUR ability. A miracle is something GOD does–against the odds according to man’s definitions–that truly demonstrates His power. It is a circumstance, not a coincidence, and it points us to Him in order for us to be reminded of who we are, and Who He is.
I pray that God will reveal Himself to you today. May you experience His presence and His power, so you can have peace and assurance for today and tomorrow.
