  1. Every penny counts: Any money found in the washer or dryer automatically goes into a rainy day account. This teaches kids(and adults) to be more responsible and funds emergencies.

On a larger scale: Any income we receive that is not regular salary, gets set aside in a savings account. We get used to living on that certain monthly amount. An extra $50 or $200 from a rebate, TDY pay, petsitting for a neighbor or other occasional money goes straight to savings.

  2. I really recommend the Dave Ramsey thing. We are taking his class called Financial Peace University at our church, and I cannot begin to tell you how much it has helped us already! I think it is something everyone should see!

  3. I'm sure to ALWAYS ask about military discounts. Even if I know an institution doesn't have a specific policy regarding discounts, a lot of cashiers and managers will give one when asked. It never hurts to ask, and it can save you big bucks over time! Also, Dave Ramsey is fantastic. With the guidance and encouragement offered by his Financial Peace University classes, my husband and I were able to dump $15,000 of debt less than a year after we were married! We're now debt free and with our next paycheck we will start Baby Step 3: A Fully Funded Emergency Fund!
