On the Battleline
By Heather Hamrick McDevitt
Time marches on And yet stands still,
When I am on the battleline Ready to do Your will;
My heart is ready, But my flesh screams no;
So here I stand Playing tug of war Within my soul.
Oh, Lord, with a Gentle tug, Please pull all of me Your way;
For as long as I remain On this line I tend to want to run away.
Draw me, O Captain, My flag I am waving high,
As I surrender My will to Yours And to my flesh I die.
O Victory is within view. Both feet have crossed the line.
Take my shaky hands And lead me forward
To the life of freedom That only in You I can claim as mine.
Don’t let me turn around And see Defeat laugh and point and glare;
Only let me see Your battle scars That for me You gladly wear.
When I begin to stumble And fall And get weary along the way,
Keep holding my hands And lift me up So that in You I can firmly stand and stay.
Like any good soldier I’ve tried to be brave,
To fight the good fight And have faith,
But the wounds That I’ve carried Have left me lonely and afraid.
When doubt entered in I saw no way.
How could I stand And be counted, When to the enemy I have swayed?
I lost sight of You And felt defenseless; My armor didn’t seem to fit.
I just wanted to give up, To sit on the battleline, Throw my hands in the air and quit.
But just as I began To lose hope, Something wonderful yet strange Took place in my retreat;
With Your strong hands lifting mine, You looked at me with an irresistible smile
As you exclaimed, “Soldier, stand to your feet!”
My Little Soldier
By Heather Hamrick McDevitt
My little soldier, Be very brave;
Hold your head up high, And His banner wave. Fight the good fight;
Hold onto faith. Be on alert, And pray, pray, pray. Never give up, Never face retreat;
Keep marching forward With purposeful feet. Aim high, Run long;
Keep on singing The victor’s song. Guard your heart, Keep your mind renewed;
Follow the Lord In all you do. With God as your captain, There’s no way you’ll lose.
Surrender to Him, And your life He’ll use.
My little soldier, Rest quietly now;
For soon the fiery darts Will try to knock you down.
Put on your armor, Hold up your sword;
Stand your guard, My little soldier, you are the Lord’s.
