Blessed is the one who always trembles before God,
but whoever hardens their heart falls into trouble.
Proverbs 28:14
An old Petra song popped into my head the other day. Petra was the Christian rock group whose songs are irrevocably interwoven into my youth group years, and every so often I’ll remember a bit or two from a Petra song as I read the Scriptures.
The song was about hardened hearts, and the chorus goes like this:
Don’t let your heart be hardened
Don’t let your love grow cold
May it always stay so childlike
May it never grow too old
Don’t let your heart be hardened
May you always know the cure
Keep it broken before Jesus
Keep it thankful, meek, and pure
Sometimes as Christians we become hardened to the needs of the world, and thus hardened within our own hearts. The Bible time and again cautions against hardened hearts. Let’s resolve to make a point to keep our hearts soft before the Lord.
