What’s your song?

Every military wife has a song – a song that they listen to when they’re sad, or plays when they’re happy, or needing some serious motivation to keep going. On our last deployment, two of my favorites that were always on my iPod’s “most played” playlist were Avril Lavigne’s “When You’re Gone” and “Keep Holding On.” I know, neither one is faith-based, but I have to say for the “Keep Holding On” song, that it often felt like God was speaking to me through those words, letting me know He was here for me and that things would be okay.

What are the songs that keep you going? What are the songs that mean the most to you? Comment and let us know and we’ll take the 10 most popular answers and list them in our next newsletter!

*Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing for a free copy of Faith Deployed: Encouragement for Military Wives. Drawing will be at noon on June 30th! Enter as often as you like!

    Mine are

    "When I'm Gone" Avril Lavigne

"Lucky" Jason Mraz & Colbie Calliat

"When I'm Gone" 3 Doors Down

"Here Without You" 3 Door Down

    "It's Been Awhile" Staind

None of those are faith based but they speak to me.

  2. avatar Pattie says:

"Less Like Scars" by Sara Groves is my theme song, pretty much all the time. One line from the chorus: "And in Your Hands the pain and hurt / look less like scars and more like character."

  3. avatar Ebony says:

Mine's always been "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor (yep, from Rocky :) . It's always on my iPod and laptop playlists.

  5. avatar Melissa says:

"More" by Matthew West. I could just picture Jesus on a mountain top shouting to me "I LOVE YOU MORE", and knowing how much He loves me and knowing that His thoughts toward me are good no matter how hard my circumstances deffinately gave me the stregnth to get through this time.

  6. avatar Alvina says:

Wake Me When September Comes by Greenday; (All I Want For Christmas) A soldier Comming Home, featuring Monty Lane; Come Home Soon by Shedaisy, and last but not least, Aint God Good, by Gold City. These songs along with John Conlee's They Also Serve seem to be play several times a day.

  7. avatar Michele says:

I have to say the song that has gotten me through my husbands deployment is going to sound a little weird. It is actually a Jonas Brothers song. Every time I hear it, it brings great memories of times my husband and I have been through and after I cry because I miss him it makes me smile. My song is When You Look Me in the Eyes by the Jonas Brothers. Sounds weird for a 42 year old woman huh!!!

  8. avatar Glenda Robles says:

My all time one would be "Praise you in this Storm" by Casting Crowns

Some more are "Come home soon" by SheDaisy, "Citizen Soldier" by 3 Doors Down, "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down,

  9. avatar Mindy says:

  11. avatar Sarah says:

I just found one on Itunes the other night: "Better Way," by Ben Harper. It helps remind me that there's a better way of getting through this deployment than feeling miserable. And it reminds me that I want help pass the time by serving others.

  12. avatar Lyndsey says:

Last deployment was So Small by Carrie Underwood. When I just felt so overwhelmed, this song reminded me to keep things in perspective. Now every time I hear it, it reminds me of that season and God's faithfulness to bring us through it.

  13. avatar Beth Bradley says:

I didn't discover this song till about half way through but it was one that hit a cord and helped me out. It is called "Move Along" by the All American Rejects. It is kind of funny b/c it was on a Youtube video that my brother in-law sent me of some of our Navy's finest. I love the video but the song is really cool. It talks about no matter how bad things can get you just have to Move Along. I recommend it if you have not heard it.

  14. avatar Stephanie says:

My "miss you" song is Lifehouse "I miss you" and my love song with my husband is New Song "When God Made You." I also like Miley Cirus "The Climb"… I'm sure I'll think of more!

  15. avatar Crystal Amber says:

There are quite a few—but I'll name just a couple:

"Happy"- Aeyisha Woods (this makes me dance and sing at the top of my lungs everytime!)

"Sleeping with the Telephone"- Reba & Faith Hill (deployment song)

"Just a Dream"- Carrie Underwood (awful, isn't it?!?!)

And my entire Amos Lee album—his music relaxes me and makes me smile :)

  16. avatar Gina says:

I dont listen to it much, because it always makes me cry, but i love "Never Alone" by Jim Brickman and Lady Antebellum :)

  17. avatar Lori says:

Hi, my FAVE song has been "We Have Overcome" by Israel Houghton. The words are:

"Thanks be to God who always causes us to triumph in His name…We have overcome…Halleujah…We have overcome, by the power of Your name…Jesus you're the one, Halleujah, The One who made a way for us to triumph in His name!"

Whenever I sing it with kids we all feel a little stronger, braver, and victorious because we're reminded that even thought Daddy may not be here or available, we are still Winners in Jesus!

  18. avatar Leah says:

My song while my husband is away is not one in particular. The thing that helps me is loading me and my son up in my husband's big Dodge pickup, putting on some Chris LeDoux (His favorite singer) and riding the back roads where we live.

  19. avatar Emily says:

My favorite is "Love Story" by Taylor Swift. He would always sing it so I makes me think of him.

  20. avatar Tricia says:

    Loves these songs:

Sleeping with the Telephone (Faith Hill and Reba McIntire)

Let Me Hold You by Stoney Larue (awesome country song)

    When your Gone (Avril Lavine)

  21. avatar Christine Hawk says:

    Chris Deburgh "I'm Coming Home"

    Shedaisy "Come Home Soon"

John Michael Montgomery "Letters From Home"

Maria Carie "Thank God I Found You"

Bryan White "God Gave Me You"

  22. avatar Cherie says:

The one that ministered to me the most when Bill first joined the JFK in 1999 was "Through The Fire" by the Crabb Family. This was our first time apart in our young marriage and I missed him so much!

The next one that got me through was " Your Grace Is Enough" by Chris Thomlin. This is the song I woke with each morning when Bill was deployed to GITMO for 18 months. It sufficient to say I made some mistakes through this one and seemed to find myself saying "Sorry" to Bill quite often. God was letting me know I was walking in Grace because the separation was so hard on both of us!

  23. avatar Cortney says:

There are a couple of the songs that mean a lot to me when my fiance was in 2008 and will be gone in 2011.

    One: Love Song – 311

Two: Livin on a Prayer (The chorus mostly…) – Bon Jovi

  24. avatar marlene brown says:

Our song is "Far Away" by Nickelback and "Like you'll Never See Me Again" by Alicia Keys. Both have got me crying and happy at the same time. My husband is learning Far Away on his guitar over there so he can play it for me when he gets back!

  25. avatar Amber says:

"Mountain of God" by Third Day, "Praise You In This Storm" by Casting Crowns, "Awaken" by Natalie Grant, "Stand in the Rain" by Superchic[k]

  26. avatar Stephanie says:

This week's free itunes download is Mallary Hope's Love Lives On.  It's fantastic, a deployment favorite.  I've got it on repeat!

  27. avatar Amanda says:

The song "Come Home Soon" by She Daisy. I heard this song for the first time while my husband was deployed last year and it felt like someone was singing exactly how I felt. The song was actually dedicated to military spouses. Great song! You can watch the video on Youtube.

  28. avatar Vanessa Walls says:

The song "Savior Please" by Josh Wilson. The first time I heard this song was just a few months ago. I felt so weary, and so alone. See, my husband is deployed, and I am living with my in laws in east TN. Everything was unfamiliar, and overwhelming. It describes exactly how I feel on my worst days, when I feel like I can barely stand, but I have to. I cried when I first heard it, because it describes exactly how I feel at times.

While I like the songs "Love Me When I'm Gone" by 3 doors down, and American Soldier by Toby Keith, I have not felt emotionally strong enough to listen to them, since my husband has been away. This deployment has made me feel at times like I am at my limit.

  29. avatar Vanessa Walls says:

On a lighter note ladies :)

This song also reminds me of God's love and to keep hoping. He is faithful, and will get us through.

  30. avatar Jamie Thomas-Tillman says:

One of my fav's is "Alone in this Bed" By: Framing Hanley. We are 3 weeks away from my husband leaving again and this is going to be the hardest with our baby girl turning 2 while he is gone. All of the songs posted have really helped me!  I pray that everyone's husbands make it home safe! God Bless!

  31. avatar Kendra Brown says:

Me and my boyfriend would always listen to "If it means alot to you"- a day to remember. it has a bad ending but the rst of the ong is really very touching. All of your songs have helped me so very much thank you.

  32. avatar crystal winklepleck says:

I listen over and over to an old Elton John song:" I Guess thats why they call it the blues." It is not inspirational by any means, but it is a good one to cry over. And sometimes don't we as women, let alone military wives, just need to cry?

  33. avatar Rachel Schaekel says:

    "Faithfully" by Journey

“Lucky” Jason Mraz & Colbie Calliat

    "I’m Already There" by Lonestar

  39. avatar Brandi says:

I have a cd a friend made me with songs from my wedding and I play it at least once a day usually in the mornings. Steven Curtis Chapman's I will be here is probably one that just really speaks volumes. There are a lot of others I see listed here already too!

  40. avatar Amber says:

    Emiliani Torrini – Fisherman's Women

It's short, sweet beautiful. I like to lay down after a shower on my bed and play this song, singing as loud as I can. It reminds me there are other's out there waiting for their men. I think of all the other wives singing this song and having the same feeling. It's sad, but comforting at the same time. I hope others find it comforting too.
